My favorite Mexican singer is Jose Romulo Sosa Ortiz, known most commonly by his stage name, Jose Jose. Jose is a singer, musician, and has acted before. He was raised in Mexico city, where he grew up alongside a family of musicians. Jose began playing guitar in his early teens and singing serenatas, or serenades. He later learned to play base and double base. Jose's success began in the early 70's. His first great recognition was at a Latin musical festival where he sang his most well known song, El Triste.

Jose rose internationally as one of the most popular Latin singers in the 1980's. His 1983 album Secretos had a large number of international hits. He received many Grammy nominations and his recognition grew worldwide. His music even reached non-Spanish-speaking countries. Jose has also starred in movies such as Gavilán o Paloma and few others. Jose has earned the nickname, El Príncipe de la Canción which translates to The Prince of Song. Many Latin singers now are inspired by him and he is an iconic singer for his time. Jose's career has now ended, due to him loosing the powerful tenor voice he once had.

Jose's career ended before I was born, so how did I come to listen to his music? It was through my parents that I got to first listen to him. I have a fascination to his romantic voice and I like ballads, so his music is really my taste. He has so much sentiment and emotion in his singing. I like to stay in touch with my culture, and this is the way I do it, through listening to Mexican music, especially oldies that my parents play.
